Due to the growing shortage of caregivers from an aging population and the increased need for childcare, the Canadian government now provides pathways for caregivers to become permanent residents. This allows them to settle long-term and bring their families with them.
Whether you have experience in child care, elderly care, or supporting people with disabilities, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from finding a job with visa sponsorship to applying for permanent residency. Let’s get started on your journey to working in Canada as a caregiver.
Types of Caregiver Roles in Canada
Canada offers different types of caregiver jobs, depending on the needs of families and care facilities. Here are the most common roles:
Live-In Caregiver
A Live-In Caregiver resides with the employer to provide full-time care, assisting with personal needs, meals, light housekeeping, and companionship for children, seniors, or individuals with disabilities.
In-Home Caregiver (Non-Live-In)
In-Home Caregiver works in a client’s home without residing there, offering daily support like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and mobility assistance. Unlike live-in roles, this position provides greater flexibility in scheduling, making it ideal for caregivers who prefer adaptable hours.
Hospice / Palliative Caregiver
Provides comfort and emotional support to terminally ill patients, often in hospices, hospitals, or private homes.
Housekeeper / Domestic Caregiver
Combines caregiving with household chores (cleaning, laundry, meals) for families with young children or elderly members needing light assistance.
