The amount paid to INEC ad-hoc staff is generally an election duty allowance, rather than a regular monthly salary. The amount can therefore vary according to the position, election and current INEC-approved payment arrangement.
Who Are INEC Ad-Hoc Staff?
INEC ad-hoc staff are temporary personnel recruited to support the Commission in carrying out election-related duties. INEC’s review of the 2023 General Election describes them as temporary employees engaged specifically for electoral activities.
INEC recruit serving corps members, students of tertiary institutions, eligible public servants, former corps members and other qualified applicants who meet the requirements for the particular election staff position.
INEC Ad-Hoc Staff Positions and Roles
Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO)
The SPO supervises polling activities across a cluster of polling units. The role includes supporting and monitoring Presiding Officers, ensuring that election materials are available, responding to problems during polling and ensuring that election materials and results are properly returned.
For the 2026 Osun recruitment, INEC required SPO applicants to be public or civil servants on Grade Level 10–14, or eligible Registration Area Officers/INEC staff within the specified grade level.
Registration Area Centre (RAC) Manager
The RAC Manager is responsible for the designated Registration Area Centre where election personnel may assemble before deployment to their polling locations.
INEC’s 2026 eligibility requirements specify that applicants for this position should be a Head of School or staff of the school, institution or public building hosting the RAC, with the specified minimum grade requirement.
Presiding Officer (PO)
The Presiding Officer is responsible for the overall conduct of activities at the assigned polling unit on Election Day. The PO oversees polling, sorting and counting of votes, handles election materials and ensures that completed results and other required materials are properly delivered after the election.
INEC also identifies the PO as the officer in charge of polling-unit activities and provides detailed responsibilities for the position.
Assistant Presiding Officer (APO)
Assistant Presiding Officers work under the supervision of the Presiding Officer and are assigned specific responsibilities at the polling unit.
Depending on their assignment, APOs may be responsible for:
- Verification and statistics
- Register checking and inking
- Queue control
- Ballot paper issuance/oversight at a voting point
INEC’s official election-officials page describes the specific responsibilities of APO I, APO II, APO III and APO (VP).
Registration Area Technical Support (RATECH)
RATECH personnel provide technical support for election technology and related electoral operations. INEC’s 2026 eligibility requirements state that applicants for this category must have an IT background, with eligible INEC ICT staff also included among the specified applicants.
